Do mini splits actually work in cold New England winters?

What's the difference between a single-zone and multi-zone system?

A single-zone system pairs one outdoor unit with one indoor air handler — perfect for a room addition, home office, finished basement, or garage. A multi-zone system connects one outdoor unit to multiple indoor air handlers (typically 2–5), allowing you to heat and cool your whole home with independent control in each zone. During your free site assessment, we’ll recommend what makes sense for your space.

Do I need ductwork?

No. That’s one of the biggest advantages of a mini split system. The indoor and outdoor units connect through a small conduit that requires only a 3-inch hole in the wall. This makes installation fast, clean, and possible in older homes that were never built for central air.

How much does a Mitsubishi mini split cost?

Single-zone systems typically run $5,500–$10,000 installed. Multi-zone whole-home systems generally range from $12,000–$22,000 depending on the number of zones and complexity of the installation. Before those numbers put you off, factor in the rebates and tax credits below — most customers are surprised how much comes back.

What rebates and tax credits are available?

There are rebates in every state! It’s best to contact us to determine the best rebates available as they change regularly. For Example, NH is adding a very generous low and moderate income rebate in summer of 2026.

Can I pair a mini split with solar?

Absolutely — and this is where Sundial is different from a standard HVAC company. We design solar and mini split systems together from the start, optimizing your solar array to offset your heat pump’s energy use. The result: you heat and cool your home with power your roof generates. Many customers dramatically reduce or eliminate their heating fuel costs entirely. How efficient are these systems compared to oil or electric baseboard?

Very. Mitsubishi mini splits can be up to 3–4 times more efficient than electric resistance heat (like baseboard), and dramatically cheaper to operate than oil or propane. Heat pumps don’t generate heat — they move it — which is why they use so much less energy. For most homes switching from oil or propane, the operating cost savings are substantial.

How long does installation take?

Most single-zone installations are completed in one day. Multi-zone whole-home systems may take two days. There’s no ductwork to run, so the process is cleaner and faster than a traditional HVAC install. You’ll be up and running the same day in most cases.

How loud are mini splits?

Very quiet. Most Mitsubishi indoor units operate at around 19–26 decibels — quieter than a whisper. The outdoor unit is also significantly quieter than a traditional central air condenser. Most homeowners forget it’s running.

Can a mini split replace my existing heating system entirely?

n many cases, yes. A properly sized multi-zone Mitsubishi system can serve as your primary heating and cooling source year-round. Some homeowners choose to keep a backup heating source (like a pellet stove or small oil furnace) for extreme cold events or added peace of mind, but for most homes in New England, a Mitsubishi Hyper-Heat system is more than capable of handling the full load.

What maintenance is required?

Mini splits are low-maintenance compared to oil or propane systems. The main tasks are cleaning or replacing the indoor air filters every few months (easy to do yourself) and an annual professional check of the refrigerant and electrical connections. No annual oil burner service, no tank fills, no fuel deliveries.

What is Geothermal Heat and Air Conditioning?

Geothermal is just another type of heat pump. Geothermal is is “earth heat” – the energy contained in the subsurface. Sundial drills wells into the ground to harvest the consistent subsurface temperature. We pump water down into the wells, then draw it back up to surface and run it through a modern heat pump. This process is used to heat and cool your home  year round.

Does Geothermal Work in New England?
